Swim-lessons Saga: Part I

I planned to write a post about how I almost drowned in the deep end yesterday, but then thought it something too trivial and stupid to post, but then decided that since this was sorta like a personal blog, and since I didn't care if people read my swimming sagas and giggle, here it is.

Scene
: Swimming Pool
Time: 4:45 PM
Location: 6 feet end of the pool

I bloody well drowned yesterday.. not just the first time fear of the deep end, but really. We were starting that part of the pool yesterday.. diving in from the sidewalks one by one, and the trainer was supposed to be in the pool, watching us and pulling us out after we exhausted our air supply. I know, an experienced swimmer can go across the pool in one gulp of air, but I'm hardly a swimmer yet. Anyhow, when my turn came, the trainer suddenly got distracted and went off somewhere when I dived, and unfortunately in that very dive from the sidewalks, I sort of made a bad jump and lost my so-called balance in water and starting going 'into' the 6 feet deep water head first and rotating along the body axis, instead of floating flat. And the stupid Goggles get yanked off my head each time I dive in because of the sheer force of the water hitting the face. So I somehow managed to push myself up against the floor and barely managed to float to the top somehow. And then that guy comes over and 'pulls' me out again. I drank a bit of that dirty (chemical) water, as I was out of breath by the time I came out, I was at the bottom for almost 5-6 seconds, swinging my hands and legs to and fro like a madman. ;-) Hand and leg movements take a lot of your breath away.

As for my progress in swimming, today was my 5th day, because I was down with some fever and cold for 2 days.. possibly due to the pool. As of now I can sort of swim and get to the other end of the shallows in one breath.. I've finally begun to float across the pool quite decently, though my swimming style presently is more like a crazy ballet of a mad-man. If I did it outside the pool, I'd probably get lynched and taken to a mental asylum.

I'm really bad at talking about my experiences etc, so sorry if I've disappointed anyone reading this blog with some hopes of a nice post. I enjoy writing technical posts and talking about technical stuff or music. :-) I'm planning to start a series of 'Interesting Projects' that I'm currently doing once my DCE paper gets over on the 30th... so that might be something that is worth reading, rather than stupid banters of a lousy beginner in swimming. Don't worry, its not going to be too technical.

I was just curious, so I looked up the dictionary and found that the word lynched is used exactly like I used, except that the person in question ends up dead pretty soon. :-) That was not my intention, since that statement was followed by me going to the mental asylum, which I obviously wouldn't be taken to if I was dead right?

But the word 'lynched' sounds dramatic, and I feel like using it in that sentence. So if I just quietly respell it to say, 'lynche', and hope that nobody notices my endeavor to coin a milder form of the otherwise gruesome word.. do you think I'll get away with it? ;-)

I empathise with you.I ignored my Dad when he said that there was hardly any need to learn diving until you can swim the whole 25 mt length of the pool comfortably without getting exhausted and touching your feet to the ground.I went with the trainer to dive in the six feet area.I dived fine and managed to make it to my trainer freestyle. It was fine until I reached the 4.5 feet water.I got exhausted and tried to touch my feet to the floor but being used to do so in shallow water I miscalculated the distance and went down. There wasn't any air in my lungs, there was only water in my mouth and my nose.I lost all sense of direction and nearly drowned. My Mom had to rescue me.So, no more deep water for me.It would take me a while to recover from this experiance :-/

Watch "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and you'll get a nice tip which can help you when you're drowning. It would be really interesting to see if you could figure that "tip" out. Don't worry if you can't, as I'll keep visiting.

As far as I can recall, there was no swimming/lake sequence in the Sorcerer's Stone. Maybe you mean Goblet of Fire in which Harry takes Gillyweed to survive underwater during the 2nd task of the Triwizard Tournament.

By "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone", I mean Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. No errors.

I don't think there's any chance that I'm going to be watching HP:SS while I'm supposed to be studying for my next exam. :-) By the time my next (and last!) paper is done, I think I'd get adjusted to the deep end.. so you might as well tell it to me or forget it. ;-)

Hello! I wandered in here from your interesting observation/comment on Arjun Singh's antecedents in the DynamiX blog.

Interesting story about your drowning... reminds me of the days I was learning to swim :-) Well, good luck with your swimming and diving.

I find it interesting that this particular Harry Potter book is called "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" in India and not by the original British title "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone". Apparently the stupid average American kids weren't expected to know what a Philosopher is and so the American publishers insisted on changing it to Sorcerer.
Surely Indian kids are much brighter... at least they used to be in my days... :-b
